About the Project
The Operations and Maintenance Center Expansion project doubles the capacity for railcars to support the growing demands of the Valley Metro Light Rail System. The construction consisted of installing additional trackwork, expanding the maintenance of equipment (MOE) building, expanding the maintenance of way (MOW) building, purchasing and installing industrial equipment, supporting systems, a new traction power substation and related site development.
The expansion of the MOE added three pits and associated mezzanines for the inspection and maintenance of the light rail vehicles. This expansion doubled the capacity of the MOE to handle additional volume of trains and increase the movement flexibility within the yard. The MOW renovation doubled the existing shop and material storage spaces. This allowed for the planned increased system service area and the required immediate response to ensure the continued operation of the transit system.
The entire facility remained operational throughout the construction process and provided uninterrupted rail service while navigating red tag outages, working around the live overhead catenary system and uncovering unmapped underground utilities.
